Russia proud of its tennis icon, Maria Sharapova – Tennis News
Appreciation and congratulations keep pouring upon the Russian beauty queen, Maria Sharapova, from all over the world after her memorable French Open title victory last week. The Russian government, including the President and
the Prime Minister, also sent their praises for their country’s legendary tennis professional on completing her Career Slam and becoming the world number one player among women.
President Vladimir Putin sent a congratulatory telegram to Sharapova (resided in Florida, USA) and paid his regards on her mammoth feat.
“You have reached the peak which was conquered earlier only by the world's strongest and legendary tennis players — the wining of all four Grand Slam events,” said Putin in his message to Sharapova. “This is a deserved award for
your talent and outstanding work.”
The Russian Prime Minister, Dmitry Medvedev, rendered his best wishes for his nation’s beloved sports icon on Facebook, citing: “You showed magnificent play there. All of Russia, millions of your fans across the country supported
you and wished you to win there.”
Sharapova is only the 10th women professional in the history of the game to bag all of the four coveted Grand Slam titles in her career, which is certainly nothing less than a glorious dream for every tennis player.
The 25-year-old has been the world number on more than one occasions in the past, so reaching the top of the WTA Premier Rankings is nothing new for her. She was more concerned of cashing in her opportunity to achieve the Career Slam and her voyage proved
fruitful in the end.
“I have a lot more in me,” said the Russian. “I have money; I have fame; I have victories; I have grand slams. But when your love for something is bigger than all those things, you continue to keep getting up in the morning when
it's freezing outside, despite knowing that it can be the most difficult day.”
Her Roland Garros triumph has boosted up the Russian hopes of winning the all-prestigious Olympic Gold medal at the grandest of sports event in July. Sharapova has set her eyes on the Wimbledon Championships glory prior to launch
her onslaught at the Olympic Games.
