Russia sending a message ???

Question

watching the news here and admists the propaganda and bull **** as per usual from britsh and american media im wondering if this is simply russia sending a message to europe ... the eu have for want of a better explaination " blowing a lot of smoke up ppl arses " and a lot of talk about the creation of a european super power wont go away ... is this russia way of saying we wont let that happen we wont be pushed over and if u have forgotten we are the only power in the region and theres nothin u can do to us ...... a new cold war perhaps eu and russia

No I don't think so, Russia is anxious to join the economic union of E.U. and this war against the Georgian state is something that is separate from Europe. It's more like a serious squabble between siblings for control of Daddy's company.

I'll admit it's a deadly squabble but it isn't a "message" to be sent to anyone but the Georgians.

I think that you are right. Russia wants to reassert itself and now has a big weapon which are its enormous resources of oil and gas on which most of the rest of Europe has to relay.

The drawback is that Russia's reputation as politically a nasty nation will increase enormously and this will not get it any friends but will harden everybody's attitude against it because they will see it more as a dangerous enemy. In the end Russia is strong and can afford to bully and be arrogant but the rest of the world united is stronger.

At the moment it looks like the beginning of a new cold war, although I think that with the exception of the Gorbachev's period the cold was has never really gone away

Russia is sending a message that he can annihilate a weak and small nation at a slight touch. But this is not playing to its advantage. Its very likely that the nations in the caucuses region will strengthens its defense against Russia. And a new military alliance against Russia is very likely to happen. The alliance to NATO will be very much appreciated because Russia is sending a message that "You my former slave should still fear me".

Russia has backed the west up. Now they can say to countries like Ukraine etc. ' look what your new western friends do for you when the chips are down...............NOTHING !! ' So the people in those countries will see this and vote for leaders more compliant to Moscow. The west has been really rumbled this time as being a bunch of soft flabby windbags who talk a lot and do nothing. This is dangerous as now many smaller nations like Georgia will lose all faith in the west. This is the message Russia has sent, you cannot rely on the west.
