Russia sweeps Poland in CEV Volleyball Champions League match
Poland’s national women’s volleyball team had a match with Russia on December 7th in a Pool C match of the CEV Volleyball Champions League. The tournament is currently taking place in the Polish city of Sopot. The venue of the match between Poland
and Russia was the Ergo Arena. The two teams made a show of their skills in front of a large crowd of spectators that totalled to be 3,241.
It did not take long for the match to reach its conclusion as the Russians were able to assert their dominance despite playing against the raised odds of being in the home ground of their opponents. The match ended when the Russians making a clean sweep
over Poland. By the time that the Russians were celebrating their well deserved win, the score board showed the following final set scores: 25-15, 25-19 and 25-23.
Interestingly, the Polish squad performed better with each progressing set of the game. In the first set, Poland was seen to have obvious problems with coming into form as they were making blunders that cost them valuable points while the Russians were playing
their game in a strong and consistent manner. This enabled the Russians to get the lead in no time and stick with the advantage until the end of the frame while the Polish kept trailing far behind all the way. The second set of the frame was a bit more encouraging
for the hundreds of Polish fans that had packed the arena as the Polish squad was able to provide some challenge to the Russians for the first half of the set. The frame remained close till the middle when the Russians were able to put on a spurt of speed
and take the advantage for themselves.
Once the Russians pulled ahead, the Polish were not able to close in the gap and let another set slip out of their hands. With two sets down, the Polish were able to rally themselves together in the third frame and give the Russians a tough time. Both the
teams stayed neck to neck with each other till the final stages of the frame however, the Russians proved to be the better of the two as they got themselves the third frame too.
The coach of the Russian team, Rishat Gilyazutdinov, explained her feelings in the following words after the completion of the match: “I am happy because we played our best match of the season and took a very important win.”
On the other hand, the leader of the Polish team made the following comments: “Congratulations to the Russian team. I am sorry for this defeat in straight sets.”
