Russian, Ekaterina Makarova conquers Luxembourgian, Anne Kremer in the 1st round – Baku Cup2011
Tuesday, July 19, 2011 was the continuation of the first round of Baku Cup 2011. Kicking off; the match was set between the Russian, Ekaterina Makarova and the Luxembourgian, Anne Kremer at the Baku Tennis Academy, Baku, Azerbaijan.
Ekaterina Makarova won the match in a run of the mill victory of 6-1,6-4 in sixty three minutes and seven seconds.
Not meeting for the first time both the players were familiar with each other’s style and technique. The last time they had taken up the gauntlet was at the Bratislava 2 tournament in Bratislava, Slovakia. Due to the large support
of the fans present at the tournament Ekaterina Makarova won the match 7-6(6), 7-6(7). Hence, taking a lead of 1-0 in the head-to-head against Anne.  The Higher Power had granted Anne her wish, to avenge her loss.
The first set of the match saw extreme precession from both the players and neither of them struck any double faults but Ekaterina had aced four times and won all her first serve points ( ten out of ten). She was like a plank of
wood that would rebound everything that came her way and due to her excellent return serve along with her towering defence she won the match with flawless victory 6-1. During the match the court became silent and some say that they could hear Anne Kremer sob
while she played.
After being beaten black and blue by the 23-year old Russian, one would have thought Anne Kremer to show her supremacy as having more experience under belt should’ve given her a competitive edge. However to everyone’s dismal she
wasn’t even able to stand up after the beating. Nonetheless one has to appreciate her effort in the game with the old age wearing her down she still managed to play better than the first set and did not falter with her accuracy instead she won a hundred percent
of her break points and even had a better return game but alas, she lost the match to her opponent Ekaterina because she had a better serve and return game than her rival. Thus the total set points saw a difference of only three points between both the players.
The overall match saw; Ekaterina Makarova ace five times, struck only two double faults, won seventy six percent of her total serve points along with forty eight percent win in total return points and her total percentage win mounted
to almost twice as much as her opponents which were a walloping sixty one percent.
The 23-year-old Russian, Ekaterina Makarova will see the likes of the 24-year-old Ukrainian, Kateryna Bondarenko in the second round of the Baku Cup 2011.
