Russian Coach Vladimir Alekno speaks about Olympic qualification – Volleyball news
Vladimir Alekno, who has been with the Russian men’s national volleyball team for five seasons, is proud of his team’s accomplishments in the last season.
Russia earned an Olympic seat via 2011 FIVB World League. The boys around Vladimir Alekno could not perform up to the mark at the European Championship campaign but covered the deficit with gold medal victory in the FIVB World League, which confirmed Russia’s
participation in the Olympics.
Speaking of the great achievement, Alekno recently told the Russian Volleyball Federation website, “The most important goal - qualifying for the Olympic Games - has been achieved.”
He further added that the team has all the data in order to go for a gold medal. The only question is whether they will follow the same route known to victory as it was in Gdansk and Japan.
The Russian team featured in three big competitions of the year, the 2011 FIVB World League, the Men’s European Volleyball Championship, and the FIVB Men’s World Cup.
They did well at the World League, which covered its length from May 27 to July 10. Team staged a great action on the net and added second straight gold medal to their tally. Later on, they took part in the 2011 Men's European Volleyball Championship, which
was organised by Europe's governing volleyball body, the CEV in September.
Austria and Czech Republic hosted the event from September 10 to 18, 2011, where Russia failed to find a place in the top-3 teams of the competition. They finished fourth at the continental championship and returned home without any medals. It was pretty
much a disappointing finish for Russia when the London Olympic event was approaching.
Nevertheless, the Head Coach Vladimir Alekno worked on the shortcomings of his team and enabled them to get back on track in the next international campaign. The 2011 FIVB World Cup created a perfect opportunity for Russia to gain their lost pride. Russia
remained remarkably consistent throughout the campaign and paved their way to the top position. With gold medal victory, Russia was also awarded with the Olympic berth.
After claiming the Olympic ticket, Russia is now geared up for the fourth Olympic Title. Previously, the former Soviet Union team seized Olympic gold medals in 1964, 1968, and 1980. It has been more than 30 years that Russia has yearned for a chance to capture
the Olympic title. Now they have a fair chance to live up their dream. However, they will be required to showcase a flawless performance as world’s best teams will be on board in search for the Olympic Title.
The Russian Coach believes that his team have every chance of claiming gold in the upcoming Olympic Games in London.
Let’s wait and see if Russia is able to win another Olympic title this year.
