Russian Fencers shine as Under-23 Kazan European Fencing Championship wraps up: Fencing News
The U-23 European Fencing Championship concluded yesterday, on May 31, in Kazan, Tatarstan in Russia with the Russian Fencers outplaying the rest of the participating nations.
In the team competition, Russian Fencers managed to secure five gold medals in the total six events, with two gold medals on the last day and three on the fourth day of the championship.
The only gold-medal win they missed was in the Men’s foil discipline in which the Italian team overpowered the hosts at 45-35 in the final bout of the competition and Russian foilists were left with a silver medal in hand.
With five top spots in team and four tops spots in the individual events, Russia conquered the first rank seed of the junior championship. They topped with a total of 14 medals, including 9 gold, 2 silver and 3 bronze medals.
Beneath them, Italy took the second place with a total of 7 medals, out of which 2 medals were of gold and silver each whereas three were bronze medals. In addition to this, the Polish fencers earned a total of 9 medals, including
only one gold, 3 silver and 5 bronze medals.
Among the female Russian fencers, one of the local favourites, Kamilla Gafurzyanova sealed a gold win in women’s foil team. She started off with a bronze medal in the individuals and finished with the top podium place, accompanied
by her other team members.
She commented, “I was happy to compete at home, to have my family and friends supporting me fencing. Their support has definitely helped me to collect at once two medals. I was awarded bronze in the individual contest. I think, it
is an achievement indeed, though I had had an objective a bit higher.”
She further congratulated her team members for the gold-winning success in the Women’s foil and expressed her joy for winning the top spot. She said that they were destined to take the first place because they fought with a great spirit
together and followed their plan, no step back.
