Russian/Georgian/South Osettia war?

So there's this war between Russia, Georgia, and South Osettia. South Osettia was trying to gain independence from Georgia, so a war started. Then Russia attacked Georgia.

Do yo think this will escalate? Is Georgia a NATO nation? Will the USA get involved?

  1. Georgia is requesting to be apart of NATO, but they're not.  Russia is pissed that one of their former provinces is wanting to join the 'dark side of the force.'...something left over from the Cold War days. I doubt whether the US will get involved since oil is not part of the equation.  We'll just leave Georgia high and dry even after they're calling for our assistance.

  2. It shouldn't escalate to the point of other countries getting invovled. The UN will definitely be dealing with the matter. This would be no different than the Russia/Chech moments. They beat up on each other then leave each other alone for awhile.

  3. It would be disastrous to intervene militarily on what Russia considers it's home soil.  I'd be like if Russia sent in troops to protect the L.A. Rodney King rioters.  How do you think the US would have reacted to THAT?  It's not a perfect analogy, but that's how it would feel to the Russian government.

If the US intervened militarily, I think the conflict would eventually escalate into a strategic nuclear exchange after many Russian and American soldiers die fighting each other.  Russia still has 10,000+ nuclear weapons aimed at the US.  They do not have the ability to project conventional power, so a strategic nuclear response will be one of their few options.

That being said, the Georgian government deliberately chose the Olympics to initiate this.  They sent in troops first and Russia responded.  It is already escalating, with Russia attacking Georgian forces in Georgia proper, not just South Ossetia.

We should stay out.  We're already over-committed to Iraq & Afghanistan anyways.

  4. US is going to stay out of it, yes it will esclate to something alot more worse yes georgia is NATO

  5. georgia isn,t a nato member yet if it was war would have been declared right away. yes the war will probley russia wants to control the oil from the caspien sea, looks like we could be in trouble'''''

  6. Generally in Eastern Europe there has been, since the reemergence of Russia in its new incarnation,  a general fear that what independence had been won would soon be erroded. Protection of a seperatist minority in Georgia is a pretext which will test the waters for further incursions into former soviet states unless it is quashed now. If one looks at what was happening prior to this campaign, Georgian actions in South Osetia were directed towards criminallity which may or may not have been supported by the Kremlin. If you remember your history this was also the context in which Hitler annexed the Sudetenland beginning WW2. News reports, which surprise me, seem to support Russia's right to maintain buffer states in the face of soverign nations right to govern themselves,( government direction on press releases no doubt since Russia is a gas rich nation) .If Russia was truly interested in the welfare of it's citizens it would start with the social problems which pervade every level of Russian society. The Imperialist Bear is out of hibernation and must be taught a lesson while still drowsy

  7. Of what i have watch in tv and in internet the Bush tell both countries to calm down and wait to the un to get together. i think that the USA will not get too involved because of what is happening in Iraq. but the UN Representatives get together today but they didn't get onto agree so the UN representatives will get together again tomorrow to try and stop the war. But it is really too difficult to stop it so it's more probably that the war will happen. and its probably that other countries will join the war. so its a major thing.

  8. The days, if they ever existed, when the USA could do anything to stop this sort of conflict are long over.

The Americans will make lots of noise and as always the Russians will ignore them.

The European Union and the UN will meditate and Georgians will end up having terms dictated to them.

This fantasy talk of tactical nuclear weapons etc, just goes to show how utterly out of touch some North Americans are when it comes to the rest of the world.

  9. Russia is making a preemptive strike to secure its national security much like the US.

No escalation beyond those borders. Georgia is not a NATO member and US cannot get involved w/o dereliction of the middle east.

Maybe we will get to see the affects of short range tactical nuclear warheads... shoud US persist like it did in Serbia..

  10. USA got involved several years ago when it started arming Georgia in order to fight against Russia with it's hands. The genocide of Osettins being committed by Georgians was planned by US and aimed at involving Russia into the war.

To zerophobe: if someone is trying to annex South Osettia, is's Georgia, not Russia, as both South Osettia and Georgia had equal rights for independence when Soviet Union was separating. Russia's main goal here is to stop bloodshed unleashed by Georgia on US advice.

  11. Georgia is not a NATO nation yet, and Russia only sent an armored column to the border. Although something as stupid as this could trigger a wider war.
