Russian National Championships set to decide the contingent for Daegu – Athletics news
With the IAAF World Athletics Championships just around the corner, athletics nations are striving hard to choose and select players that can represent them well and compete with international rivals in Daegu. One such country, which is considered as a strong
contestant of the athletics extravaganza is Russia, which has always managed to finish among the top-finishers in the medal tally.
Russia, in an attempt to finalise its squad for the global athletics championships, has recently conducted the Russian National Championships which commenced on Thursday, July 21. As it is evident from the name of the event, it will extend a final chance
to the national team members to display a performance that may help them in getting a ticket to Korea and to emerge at an international level event. The World Athletics Championship is going to commence in the last week of the coming month and will last for
nine days.
The criterion for winning a Daegu ticket at this National Championships event is rather simple. The top-two finishers of the meet will be included into the squad that will represent the country at the tournament. Moreover, the fitness and technical soundness
of athletes will also help them to get selected for the World Championships, as the Council of Coaches has been given the right to chose a third athlete of their own choice from every discipline.
This third athlete can even be selected without taking part in this localised event. An example of an athlete who despite of not showing up at the National Championships, will make it into the world level tournament is Yelena Isinbayeva, the formidable Pole
Vaulter, who is currently in Monaco and who, amid her performance at various international events, has already carved out a place in the team for Daegu.
Isinbayeva, who has made a comeback to the game after a hiatus of about one year, has been consistently dominating the field since she is a world record holder for the discipline. Provided that she manages to avoid injuries and retains her present performance,
there is no doubt in the fact that she will be easily getting the medal for which she is a pre-favourite.
As the Championship lingers on, it will give a glimpse of the quality of field that is being assembled for the Daegu event. It is this quality of the squad that will help determine the chances for athletes to carve out a place for themselves against strenuous
rivals from across the world.
