Hi, I would like to build a habitat outside for my tortoises in the dog run (we never use it for the dogs). How would I go about doing this? As far as plants and any boxes or shelters I may need. I live in Arizona, so there is always scorching heat.

  1. http://www.slowcoach.org.uk/slocare.html... this site has a good section on out door enclosures  Outdoor pens are by far the best option. The tortoises get the benefit of sunshine (for the synthesis of Vit D3) and exercise. A pen can also be planted with a variety of edible weeds and plants (edible landscaping).  It is very import to keep in mind that Russians are escape artist. When building a pen a barrier must be dug around the perimeter at least 8" deep...deeper if the soil is easy to dig. They are amazing climbers. The pen should be a foot high with an in facing lip. Pay special attention to corners. Also of concern is predators. Raccoons are particularly notorious for getting into pens and eating turtles.

  2. It's great that you're keeping him outside! Tort's thrive being outdoors.

If you decide to make a larger enclosure, remember to dig down at least 6 inches and bury wire so that your little guy can't escape.

You can use organic top soil or peat moss mixed with play sand for the bedding.

If you keep your tort on grass it could end up with shell rot.

Make sure that the area recieves morning sun so that he can warm up. Also, provide enough shade so that he can cool off. Provide a shallow dish of water for soaking and drinking. If it gets really hot out you can spray down the enclosure with a hose.

    Have fun with your tort!
