Russian athletes outshine in damp weather at the European Team Championships – Athletics news
Weather conditions are among the primary affecters that can change the results of a sport and athletics is no exception to this phenomenon. However, outstanding performers always make their way out of the weather conditions with their scintillating performances.
This is exactly what happened at the European Team Championships held on Sunday, June 19, at Swede city Stockholm, where the Russian contingent successfully defended their titles and outshined their rivals for bagging a staggering total of 385 on the points’
table.
The wining team’s success was mainly contributed by the four wins it earned on Sunday, one of which was brought by the Long Jump specialist, Darya Klishina.
The success brought by Klishina, the 20-year-old girl from Russia, was a main contributor towards her teams’ win. However, this formidable performance was rather expected of the young girl, who holds the Russian junior record for marking 7.03m, which is
the all time second best junior record. In this contest of the European team championships, she marked 6.74m.
Dwelling upon how she managed to beat such tormenting cold along with her fierce rival, Carolina Kluft and bagged the much needed win which helped her team prevail at the competition, the gold medallist of the European indoor championships said, “It was
very cold, my teeth were chattering from the cold. In my first attempt, I was not inspired but I did not expect that Kluft would jump so far. I expected it from some others, but they couldn’t produce it. One I’d got in front, my nerves settled.”
A surprise improvement that was observed in the performance of last year’s third finishers of the event also provided every reason to spectators to enjoy the thrilling grapple between some of the world’s best athletes. The German squad, which improved their
position from third to second on the podium, was still far behind the top finishers. Besides, apparently emerging as the closest finishers, the ultimate gap between both of the groups was of 53.5 points.
After this competition, it seemed that the idea floated by Bruno Zauli was moving well, as the plan of promoting Athletics with the help of conducting competitions among the contingent from the member countries was working. Though he himself could not see
the idea materialising, the competition has been going through strength to strength lately.
With some changes brought into the format of the game during 2008, it has not only become more interesting for observers but for athletes also, as it also provides a quality platform to the players to prepare themselves for larger events.
