Russian contingent favourites at the European Junior championships in Tallinn – Athletics news
Russia, which has been always been among the strongest contestants for the European Junior Championships titles, is all set to mark its dominance over the event all over again. The World Juniors, which are going to kick-off from Thursday, July 21, will mark
its 21st edition this year.
Russia has been topping the medal tally for past three editions of the event. Amid its strong women’s fields, the country has always been among the favourites to emerge at the event. Just like the past, this year too, Russia is going to rely upon the performance
of athletes like Vera Rudakova and Mariya Kuchina.
The athletes will represent the country in 400m Hurdles and High Jump disciplines. Spectators will particularly be looking forward to observe the performance depicted by Rudakova, who recently marked an impressive finish of 57.10 seconds at the Russian Junior
Championships.
Kuchina, on the other hand, bagged last year’s Youth Olympic Games and marked the World Junior Indoor best results for striding as high as 1.97m. After posting an emphatic 1.94m at the Russian Juniors at the start of this month, it has become evident that
she is in full form to eclipse her rivals at this year’s World Juniors.
Besides the Russian squad, there will be equally in-form athletes from the other participating nations also. Hungary, another strong contestant for the title, will be represented by Marcell Deak Nagy, the 19-year-old sprinter who specialises in 200m and
400m disciplines. He is the only runner from Europe who has clocked a 46 second finish so far and has also marked a national record of 45.74 seconds.
Another worth watching performance is expected from French middle distance runner, Pierre Ambroise Bosse, who specialises in 800m meets. The young runner boasts of a junior record in the distance he specialises in, for stopping the clock at one minute and
46.18 seconds. He will also be entering the tournament with a pre-favourite status. However, in presence of an equally quick performer from Sweden, Johan Rogestedt, he will have to show his real potential before claiming the top position on the podium.
