There are a few minor rust bubbles appearing on the hood of my car.. I was wondering what steps I could take to prevent and get rid of these? Would I have to sand it down and repaint? Thanks.

  1. Unfortunately, you will not be able to detail or compound it out yourself. The material underneath the paint is being oxidized and require stripping the entire hood to inspect for other rust spots. Then, like you said, sand it down, prime it and repaint it.

  2. If the pitting from the rust is not too deep, you can grind away all of the rust and repaint.  Rust is like cancer to metal.  If you don't remove all traces of the rust, it will only return in a short period of time.

If the rust can not be completely removed by grinding, you have only two choices.

    1. Cut out the rusted metal and weld in patches of new metal.

    Or

    2. Replace the hood.

If the vehicle is fairly new, it may be covered by the factory warranty.  General Motors cars for example have a 6 year, 100,000 mile rust warranty.  Maybe your car has a similar warranty.  It might be worth looking into.
