I had my 9 mm in storage and got it out recently to go shooting only to discover some rust on the barrel. What's the best way to repair the damage and get it range-worthy again?

  1. take four 0000 stil wool and some break free clp and rob lightly

  2. first off, think where the rust may have come from, it could be burnt powder residue from the last time it was fired and never cleaned. Though the residue is simple to wipe off when fresh, but when left untouched for a while it can harden and be very stubborn and rust the gun.

i would simply recommend a bristle bore brush for the 9 mm barrel size, and some gun barrel cleaning solvent. all is readily available in a simple outdoor store, or even wal-mart, in a convenient all in one gun cleaning kit or individually. a basic gun clean should get it off. if its hard try soaking the rust with the bore cleaner solution for a bit to work it self into the rust and weaken it. it may not all break loose on the first shot so keep passing the bristle brush tip multiple times to clear the rust off. this should do it, if not, last thing i can think of is a rust remover/prevention chemical that is available at hardware stores. i know this works great on rusted metal items ive used in the passed, and should work perfectly for the gun.

that should clear it all up. if you still have a little bit of the residue left, the gun will still fire and perform alright. after you fire it give it another good clean. the shooting action may have removed, loosened, or helped the residue to get off. last, don't forget to apply a small amount of oil in the barrel and moving parts of the gun. hope this helps and good luck.
