Question:

Rusty water in home- any suggestions?

my house is over 30 years old, all homes in area are on well- and all have bad water. However- my pump recently went bad. The well guy replaced the pump, one of the tanks and the plumbing going from well to pump, and pump to tanks. It is a shallow well with an above ground pump. The water has never been great. I don't drink it, or give it to my animals to drink. The thing is- now that I have had to replace those things- my water is WAY rustier. Used to come out relatively clear- let it sit and would turn rusty. Now comes that way right out of the pipes- cold or hot. Anything I can do? Full of sediment. I did try a filter at one point- was pointless as it clogged very very quickly, and that was when my water wasn't half as bad as it is now. Had a greensand iron filter on it- was pretty much useless as well. city has recently run water/sewer into the area- and i am going to connect as soon as i can afford it, but it is very costly.

  1. Well I guess the only thing you can do is complain to the company that installed your upgrades to your pumping to see if anything was done wrong. Other than that I guess you should save up to get the new water/sewer stuff. The price should go down soon.

  2. It's probably not rust. It's bacteria in the well and it got stired up when the pump was replaced you can try pouring some chlorine in the well to kill it and run the water for a while. The only other option is to call a filter company and have them put in an RO Sytem.

  3. Since you already tried a filter you might have to drill another well. Deeper and in a new location. You might be right in the middle of an iron deposit. This is expensive. So if you can live on bottled water and just use the well for showering and laundry you will be alright.

  4. bad well or bad pipes or BOTH feel bad for you

good luck with the city water

  5. Don't drink the water.
