Ruta Meilutyte captures Women’s 100m breaststroke gold medal – 2012 London Olympic Games
Ruta Meilutyte of Lithuania captured gold medal of the Women’s 100m breaststroke on third day of the swimming events at the 2012 London Olympic Games in London Aquatic Centre on Monday, July 30.
The 15-year-old Lithuanian swimmer exceeded expectations of her fans as she overpowered her elite competitors in the 100m discipline. She remained marginally slower from improving the Olympic mark of Leisel Jones, who clocked 1 minute and 05.17 seconds at
the 2008 Beijing Olympics, but proved her audacity for gold medal.
Meilutyte stayed just a touch ahead of USA’s Rebecca Soni in the two-lap discipline and transpired on the finishing end for gold medal by producing a time of 1 minute and 05.47 seconds.
The gold medallist was followed by Soni, who stayed 0.08 seconds apart and finished second in the event by submitting an effort of 1 minute and 05.55 seconds.
Similarly, Soni was trailed by Satomi Suzuki of Japan, who remained full body length apart and secured bronze medal of the discipline by reporting a time of 1 minute and 06.46 seconds.
Fourth position of the race was obtained by Alia Atkinson of Jamaica, who stayed almost half second apart and hit the wall with an effort of 1 minute and 06.93 seconds.
Atkinson remained only 0.02 seconds ahead of the defending champion, Jones, who completed her race in fifth best place by clocking a time of 1 minute and 06.95 seconds.
Jones was traced by Breeja Larson of USA, who was only 0.01 seconds slower from upsetting her foregoing finisher and touched the wall with the timing of 1 minute and 06.96 seconds for sixth position.
Seventh spot of the breaststroke event was obtained by Iuliia Efimova of Russian Federation, who was 0.02 seconds behind and posted a time of 1 minute and 06.98 seconds.
Eight position of the discipline was secured by Rikke Pedersen of Denmark, who remained 0.57 seconds slower from overpowering her preceding finisher and touched the wall with the timing of 1 minute and 07.55 seconds.
Meilutyte was overjoyed with her victory in the event and said that she would try harder to break the world record in future.
