Ruta Meilutyte captures Women’s 50m breaststroke gold - FINA Swimming Championships (25m)
Ruta Meilutyte of Lithuania captured gold medal of the Women’s 50m breaststroke on second day of the 2012 FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) at Sinan Erdem Dome in Istanbul, Turkey, on Thursday, December 13.
The Lithuanian swimmer, who showed no mercy to her challengers in the prelims and the semi-finals, went full rampant in the playoff and snared the crown in a new championship record time.
With her gruelling pace, Meilutyte remained one stroke faster from her closest competitor and surfaced on the finishing end for the title by producing a wonderful time of 29.44 seconds.
Her title claiming effort remained 0.23 seconds ahead of Alia Atkinson of Jamaica, who remained prominent for silver medal of the race and tapped the wall with a nice timing of 29.67 seconds.
The second position holder was followed by Sarah Katsoulis of Australia, who stayed 0.27 seconds apart and completed the podium by winning bronze medal with the timing of 29.94 seconds.
Fourth fastest spot of the discipline was obtained by Rikke Moeller Pedersen of Denmark, who stayed 0.06 seconds slower from her foregoing finisher and tapped the wall with an effort of 30.00 seconds.
Subsequently, Pedersen was chased by the world record holder of the event, Jessica Hardy of USA, who failed to live up to the expectations of her supporters by clocking a time of 30.01 seconds.
Sixth position of the event was obtained by Petra Chocova of Czech Republic, who was 0.09 seconds slower from her preceding swimmer and surfaced on the finishing end by clocking a time of 30.10 seconds.
Chocova was followed by Rebecca Ejdervik of Sweden, who stayed 0.02 seconds slower from her foregoing finisher and ended her race in seventh place by posting a time of 30.12 seconds.
Eighth position of the discipline was obtained by Jin Zhao of China, who remained 0.31 seconds apart and settled on the finishing blockade with the timing of 30.43 seconds.
In addition, Meilutyte was extremely happy with her undisputed effort and articulated that she would train harder in future in order to improve the world record of the event.
