Ruta Meilutyte dominates Women’s 50m breaststroke heats - FINA Swimming Championships (25m)
Ruta Meilutyte of Lithuania dominated the qualification rounds of the Women’s 50m breaststroke on opening day of the 2012 FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) at Sinan Erdem Dome in Istanbul, Turkey, on Wednesday, December 12.
The Lithuanian swimmer smothered hopes of her opponents in the shortest breaststroke discipline as she made her way into the final as top fastest swimmer with an improved championship record time.
Meilutyte faced tough contest from Alia Atkinson of Jamaica from the start but with her impeccable pace, she managed to edge her out over the wall for first position.
She remained one arm-stroke ahead of her toughest contender and hit the wall with the timing of 29.56 seconds.
Her fastest qualification effort was chased by Atkinson, who remained 0.16 seconds slower from Meilutyte and reached the finishing blockade for second position by producing a time of 29.72 seconds.
Third fastest qualification spot of the race was obtained by the current world record holder, Jessica Hardy, who stayed only 0.02 seconds slower from her foregoing finisher and posted a time of 29.74 seconds.
Hardy was traced by Petra Chocova of Czech Republic, who stayed nearly half body length apart and surfaced on the wall for fourth position by producing a time of 30.13 seconds.
Fifth position of the race was obtained by Sarah Katsoulis of Australia, who stayed 0.11 seconds slower from her preceding swimmer and touched the wall with an effort of 30.24 seconds.
Katsoulis was trailed by Rikke Moeller Pedersen of Denmark, who stayed 0.01 seconds apart and finished her race in sixth place by touching the wall with a timing of 30.25 seconds.
Seventh finest qualification spot of the race was obtained by Rebecca Ejdervik of Sweden, who stayed 0.01 seconds slower and concluded her race in a time of 30.26 seconds.
Ejdervik remained 0.08 seconds ahead of Jennie Johansson of Sweden, who managed to enter the final round as eighth fastest swimmer by clocking a time of 30.34 seconds.
Furthermore, Meilutyte was extremely delighted with her fastest finish in the race and stressed that she would try hard to achieve the same in future.
