Ruta Meilutyte overpowers Women’s 50m breaststroke semi-final - FINA Swimming Championships (25m)
Ruta Meilutyte of Lithuania overpowered the semi-final of Women’s 50m breaststroke on foremost day of the 2012 FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) at Sinan Erdem Dome in Istanbul, Turkey on Wednesday, December 12.
Meilutyte spoiled the party of her opponents in the shortest breaststroke discipline and entered the playoff of the event by dominating the semi-final.
With her unrelenting efforts, she gained a marginal lead over her challengers in the event and surfaced on the finishing wall for first position with the timing of 29.51 seconds.
Meilutyte was traced by Alia Atkinson of Jamaica, who suffered a deficit of only 0.11 seconds from her preceding swimmer and emerged on the finishing blockade for second place by clocking a time of 29.62 seconds.
Subsequently, Atkinson enjoyed an advantage of 0.20 seconds over her toughest challenger, Jessica Hardy, who succeeded in securing third fastest place by submitting a time of 29.82 seconds.
Hardy was followed by Petra Chocova of Czech Republic, who remained 0.23 seconds slower from her foregoing finisher and concluded her race in fourth place by touching the wall with an effort of 30.05 seconds.
Moments later, the audience was impressed with her breath-taking efforts of Rikke Moeller Pedersen of Denmark and Sarah Katsoulis of Australia, who started a stroke-to-stroke battle for fifth spot.
Both swimmers remained engage in a fierce battle throughout the swim but none was able to reach the wall first. They stayed 0.14 seconds slower from their former finisher and posted a time of 30.19 seconds for fifth place.
Seventh best spot of the discipline was obtained by Rebecca Ejdervik of Sweden, who stayed only 0.06 seconds slower from her preceding swimmer and tapped the wall with an effort of 30.25 seconds.
Last qualification spot of the event was obtained by Jin Zhao of China, who remained 0.08 seconds slower from her foregoing finisher and touched the wall with an effort of 30.33 seconds for eighth position.
In addition, Meilutyte was extremely contented with her top finish and said that she would struggle hard to live up to the expectations of her supporters by accomplishing the title of the event.
