The EA Sports mastermind behind the resurgence of the FIFA series went on to explain how FIFA 12 changed the foundations of the series and that FIFA 13 had a few innovations of its own.
FIFA 12 went on to become the bestselling entry in the series in a matter of days as football fans could not get enough the game that pretty much changed the football simulation genre. EA Sports took a huge risk with the game as they pretty much changed a number of features that gamers relied on.
One of those features was tactical defending, which saw players manually control defenders and it added a whole new layer to the gameplay. However, a number of gamers were cautious of using the risky, yet rewarding, new component and that has led to a divide in the FIFA community between the Tactical defenders and the Legacy defenders.
Another feature introduced was the new physical Impact Engine, which removed the clipping of player models with in the game. Instead the game could render collisions based on how much physical contact was involved among other factors, and it was no longer a case of players getting injuries for the slightest of touches, as was the case in the past.
Rutter pointed out the improvements made in the last game when he said, “Last year there was this trilogy of innovations. You had the Impact Engine for the first time in the game, a new dribbling mechanic and a totally new way to defend in Tactical Defending. Three big changes that totally changed the way that the game played.”
However, he explains that with the foundation set, two new gameplay elements will expand on what FIFA 12 accomplished, when he said, “This year's game has two pillars; one which is about making a true battle for possession and the other that makes for really nice, fluid, organic freedom in attack. But underneath them are some serious, serious features like the battle for possession.”
How exactly does the battle for possession work in FIFA 13 and differ from that in previous games? Read on in the next part of the article to find out.
