Ryan Braun’s homer helps Milwaukee Brewers defeat Cincinnati Reds 6-3 – MLB Update
Ryan Braun homered twice on Friday, September 16 to help the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Cincinnati Reds 6-3 at the Great American Ball Park.
The Brewers reinforced their push to the attainment of the first ever National League Central title.
Ryan Braun also had an achievement to take pride in. He became the second player in the history of the Brewers’ franchise to have 30 homers in the season. "I'm really proud," Braun said. "There's a reason it's only been done one other time in franchise history.
It's a hard thing to do.”
Prince Fielder who had earlier said he might be playing his last year in the Brewers also commented on the game.
"That's been the goal all year, to go out with a bang," said Prince Fielder, who hit the first of Milwaukee's five homers. "Hopefully we got it back on track. Tonight was a good start."
With an incredible record of 88 wins so far and winning more, the Brewers are all set to do the previously unthinkable. “We'd been playing so well," Fielder said. "Unfortunately it (the slump) happened at the time we were trying to separate really far."
After Bronson Arroyo pitched the first shut-out inning of the game, the Brewers’ starter Randy Wolf gave up a run to Joey Votto who singled to left to give his team a lead. However, Prince Fielder was quick to homer to level the score in the second inning.
Devoid of ace starter Johnny Cueto, the Reds had to rely on Bronson Arroyo who failed to contain the Brewers’ offence in the third inning. It was first Mark Kotsay whose two-run homer put the Brewers on a leading 3-1 position while Ryan Braun had a homer
to make it 4-1.
Wolf then stiffened his pitching spell, throwing some effective pitches to add to the Reds’ miseries. Before Arroyo could settle, George Kottaras had another homer in the seventh to take the lead to 5-1.
Braun had the 30th homer of the season in the eighth to shatter any hopes of the Reds to stage a comeback in the game. As the game proceeded, Wolf kept making things awfully difficult for the Reds.
Joey Votto had a two-run single in eighth that brought the lead to 6-3 for the Reds. But that could not be taken forward. John Axford had his 43rd save of the season to pitch the shut-out ninth and conclude the game with a 6-3 win for the Milwaukee
Brewers.
The Brewers put in a brilliant performance as they battled hard to get a much needed win against the Reds. Cincinnati will be looking to improve their performance before their next match-up.
