Ryan Cochrane conquers Men’s 800m freestyle - 2011 Santa Clara International Invitational
Ryan Cochrane of Canada won the gold medal of the Men’s 800m freestyle on the initial day of the 2011 Santa Clara International Invitational.
The Santa Clara International is the final stop of the 2010-2011 USA Grand Prix Series, which will conclude after the completion of this championship on June 19, 2011. The event gives an open invitation to swimmers from all over the world, to compete with
the strongest competitors in their desired categories.
The 22-year-old Cochrane claimed the title of the event in a meet record time of 7 minutes and 52.18 seconds. His stupendous timing improved the meet record of 7 minutes and 53.56 seconds by nearly one second, set by Chad E La Tourette’s in 2009. He was
almost 20 seconds away from the world record of 7 minutes and 32.12 seconds, made by Lin Zhang of China at the 2009 Rome World Championships. In the same manner, he was almost seven seconds behind the American record of 7 minutes and 45.63 seconds, owned by
Larsen Jensen of USA.
All the podium finishers were approximately eight seconds away from each other. Cochrane was followed by Peter Vanderkaay of OLY-MI, who touched the wall for the silver medal in an impressive time of 8 minutes and 00.87 seconds. Australia’s Ryan Napoleon
stepped on the podium for the bronze medal, by clocking in a fantastic effort of 8 minutes and 08.11 seconds.
Ahmed Mathlouthi of Trojan Swim Club occupied the fourth fastest spot, by touching the wall in 8 minutes and 11.26 seconds. Ricardo Monasterio of Davie Nadadores settled on the wall as the fifth fastest swimmer, by completing his swim in a time of 8 minutes
and 13.72 seconds.
Joshua Prenot of Santa Maria Swim and Arturo Perez Vertti of Mexico ended their swims in the sixth and seventh places, with timings of 8:15.05 and 8:16.03 minutes, respectively.
Cochrane was very happy with his title winning effort and expressed that he will try to put more into his training programme to perform well in the future events.
