Ryan Couture: I am currently eyeballing Strikeforce lightweight title – UFC News
Ryan Couture, the son of legendary UFC hall of famer Randy Couture, shared his opinion on grabbing the Strikeforce divisional title. According to him, he understands very well that the next opponent will be a tough one with more name recognition.
Ryan, 29, recently grabbed an impressive split decision win over heavily experienced Joe Duarte. The duo met on the fight card headlined by the title bout between Luke Rockhold and Tim Kennedy.
The ‘Strikeforce: Rockhold vs. Kennedy’ pay-per-view was co-headlined by the bout between Nate Marquardt and Tyron Woodley with the vacant welterweight title up for grabs.
The event took place at Rose Garden in Portland, Oregon, United States and was televised live on July 14, 2012. Ryan entered the octagon as an underdog and came out victorious proving the world that he is a powerful entity in the lightweight division and
can create problems for the ace belligerents.
After the split decision win, Ryan while sharing his thoughts during a media interaction, commented that he is eyeballing the Strikeforce lightweight title, adding that once he has achieved the milestone he will definitely look forward to become a part of
UFC.
Ryan stated, “But the ultimate goal is to win that Strikeforce belt and maybe a UFC belt at some point. So I've just got to keep getting better and passing these tests, and eventually we'll be there.”
When asked as to how he and his father feel about the performance against Joe, Ryan stated, “I think we all agree that I let Joe dictate the pace a little too much and control the ring a little too much in the first round, but we were real happy in the second,
and I thought I showed a lot of guts in the third. We were both exhausted, but to fight through that and get those last couple of takedowns was a good feeling for me, and I know he was happy to see that and he was proud of me.”
Ryan outclassed Joe in almost all the significant aspects of the sport whether it was grappling or takedown, Couture junior kept a clear upper hand over Joe who was in his 13th career bout.
The Nevada hailing Ryan despite getting exhausted attempted several successful takedowns in the last round which aided him in collecting 29-28 on two cards and 28-29 on the remaining one.
