Ryan Day beats favourite Ronnie O’Sullivan in first round of 2011 Welsh Open – Snooker news
Ryan Day has beaten one of the top favourites of the tournament, Ronnie O’Sullivan by a frame score of 4-2 in the best-of-seven frame round 1 at the 2011 Welsh Open.

Six frames in total were played before the results came out and the score line was 22-109, 0-126, 100-0, 0-101, 81-0 and 27-57.
In the first frame Ronnie was the first one to start off but he could only score 22 points before he missed a red in the top yellow corner from the bottom of the table. On the contrary, home favourite Ryan Day on getting a chance produced a magnificent
109, having hit his 150th professional century in that frame, and cleared up the whole table to take away the opening frame 1-0. Similarly in the second Ronnie was unable to score any points as Ryan Day with his new cue and new confidence level
compiled another 113 clearance making the scores 2-0.
Ronnie who had to stay long in his seat bounced back this time and made an exact 100 to pocket his first frame against the Welshman to trail only by 1 frame at 2-1.
However, the confidence level of Ryan Day was sky high as in the fourth frame he after rolling in 31 gave Ronnie a dreadful snooker behind the brown ball and got 6 straight foul shots from a player like him. Another 46 from Day afterwards made the
scores 3-1.
Ryan Day only needed one frame and was looking very close to the finish line before Ronnie again brought the life back in the match by taking the fifth frame. He tried to go for the maximum but missed a red for his 8th black
but later on another 46 from him gave him a much needed frame 3-2.
Sixth, which also was the last frame, was a low-scoring frame. Both players were neck-to-neck throughout. Ronnie had his chances in the end as he needed only one red off the side cushion to level the scores after the potting the pink. However, unfortunately
he missed the pink ball from the spot giving his opponent a match winning chance which he could have had himself. Ryan Day wrapped it all up to cheer his home crowd.
Ryan Day will now play Mathew Stevens in round 2 on February 17, 2011 for the quarter-final.
