Ryan Day faces Matthew Stevens for quarter-final spot – Snooker news
Ryan Day will be facing Matthew Stevens today at the Newport Centre for his spot in the quarter-final against World Number One and defending champion, John Higgins, who had an emotional start in the Welsh Open 2011. Both will be playing their last-16 match.
This all-Wales clash is going to be exciting as both local heroes are in good form with the former making two consecutive upsets defeating People’s Champion, Jimmy White 4-0 in the qualifiers and former world champion, Ronnie O’Sullivan 4-2 in the first
round. Stevens, on the other hand beat Anthony Hamilton 4-2 in the qualifiers and Shaun Murphy 4-0 in last-32.
In his yesterday’s match, Day played brilliant snooker and for the first time in his four matches against Ronnie, he has defeated the three-time world champion which was a major upset in the tournament.
The day started off brilliantly as he hit back to back centuries of 109 and 113 to take a 2-0 lead in the match. It shook Ronnie hard but somehow he managed to bounce back and sustain the balance of the match with a century break of 100 and won the third
frame before he gave away 24 points in 6 fouls to Day who added two more breaks of 31 and 46 to clinch frame four.
Day took a 3-1 lead in the game that was taken to 3-2 when Ronnie struck back and with 56 and 25 breaks, respectively. Ryan won the sixth frame quite easily when Ronnie missed the pink off the spot and was smashed him out of the tournament permanently.
Day said, “I continued from Monday evening and, although I missed two longish reds in the fifth frame, they were not easy chances and in the last frame, there was no chance to finish the match off until he missed the pink and nudged the red over the pocket.
So I am delighted to have beaten him.”
Ronnie will be seeded lower than ninth spot in Sheffield now due to his absence in German Masters and the upset defeat to Ryan Day of Wales with frame scores 109-22, 126-0, 0-100, 101-0, 0-81 and 57-27. With his two centuries in the match, Day has compiled
a total of 151 centuries in international snooker.
