Ryan Day faces Ronnie O’Sullivan in last-32 of China Open 2011 – Snooker news
Welshman Ryan Day will face the ‘Rocket’ Ronnie O’Sullivan in the last-32 stage of China Open 2011. It is the third time both cuemen are head to head during this season. They have previously faced each other on two occasions, at the Players Tour Championship
4 (PTC4) and first round of Welsh Open 2011. In the former competition, Ronnie whitewashed Day 4-0 while in the latter, Day defeated Ronnie 4-2.
Day was seeded at number 20 in the seeding list revised after the Welsh Open. He qualified for the first round of China Open 2011 after beating England’s Tom Ford 5-1 in his qualifier encounter.
The match between Ryan Day and Tom Ford began in the morning session of the last day (Round 4) of China Open 2011 qualifiers. Day started off brilliantly taking a 3-0 early lead hitting some outstanding knocks of 42, 67 and 60 in the first three frames,
respectively.
Ford came back in the fourth frame with a fine clearance of 69 to put himself back into the game but Day destroyed his hopes clinching back to back frames to take the game 5-1 and book his place in the first round of China Open 2011 against Ronnie O’Sullivan.
Though Ronnie is fighting himself to come back into the game but everybody in snooker knows his quick potting skilld. Day, on the other hand, is performing well and the encounter will be a tough game for both cueists.
The frame scores of the Day – Ford were 72-30, 75-24, 68-53, 33-70, 75-1 and 76-37.
In other qualifiers on the fourth day of China Open 2011 qualifiers, Jimmy White defeated Dominic Dale 5-2 to pack his bags for Beijing for his first round match against Mark Selby of England. Kurt Maflin, for the first time in his career, qualified for
the televised stages of any ranking tournament. He defeated Mark King 5-1, who also lost his number 16 spot after the Welsh Open 2011. He fired two century breaks of 117 and 103 to book his spot in the first round of China Open 2011 against home favourite,
Ding Junhui.
Anthony Hamilton, who whitewashed Joe Jogia in the third round of qualifiers, faced a 5-1 defeat by the hands of Matthew Stevens of Wales. Stevens has been in good form since Welsh Open where he went through to the quarter-final stage, though he lost to
John Higgins in the quarter-final. Stevens will meet Stephen Hendry in his first round match of China Open 2011.
