Ryan Dempster helps Chicago Cubs overpower Cincinnati Reds 4-1 – MLB Update
Ryan Dempster threw the Cincinnati Reds’ offence in disarray, Carlos Pena and Aramis Ramirez hit homers to end Chicago Cubs’ eight-game losing streak with a 4-1 win on Wednesday, June 8 at Great American Ball Park.
"I didn't feel it when I got up," Dempster said. "I have never had anything like this. It was tightness in my hip. I couldn't get loose. It was hard to push off. It was hot out there and it loosened up as the game went on."
Dempster was unyielding since the start, allowing only one run as the Cubs’ offence did not falter to score adequate enough runs to clear the way for victory. While the Reds were undoubtedly the most favourite to win, the Cubs performed uncharacteristically
different.
"It's the sweetest feeling. It's right on the sweet spot on the bat, and not only that, it's the timing. It's perfect timing. It never gets old," Pena said. Pena’s homer coupled with that of Ramirez proved extremely valuable and added advantage in the face
of solid innings that Dempster pitched.
After two scoreless innings, Jay Bruce formally started the campaign for the Reds. Bruce singled to right, enabling Stubbs to score in the third inning giving a 1-0 lead to the Reds.
However, Bronson Arroyo, the starting pitcher for the Cubs, was hardly in for a surprise of disproportionate magnitude. Fairly confident, little did Arroyo realise how mercilessly the Cubs can go on a rampage.
Pena put on display a fascinating hitters’ performance and smashed a homer to right, giving a 2-1 lead to the Cubs in the fourth inning. As Arroyo stumbled to keep a check on Pena, Ramirez homered to left simultaneously to take the lead to 3-1, baffling
Arroyo and the Reds as a whole.
Dempster then dealt with the Reds’ hitters, keeping them at bay. As the Reds failed to play Dempster’s increasingly effective pitches, Ramirez hit his second and team’s fourth run in the seventh inning giving an edge to the Cubs.
"Instant offense, runs like that are great," Quade said. "We still left some people on but overall we played great."
The 4-1 lead seemed difficult to defend given the Reds’ line-up, however Sean Marshall pitched a shut-out eighth inning and Carlos Marmol went for a strong ninth inning to seal a 4-1 victory for the Cubs.
