Ryan Doumit helps Minnesota Twins edge Kansas City Royals 7-5 – MLB Update
Minnesota Twins produced a masterful performance as the edged the Kansas City Royals 7-5 at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri on Sunday, July 22 in the finale of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Twins’ Manager Ron Gardenhire will be extremely happy with his team’s effort on Sunday evening. Minnesota had the better of their opponents in series opener but the Royals fought back bravely in Game 2 to level the series.
With crowd support working in their favour, the Royals were certainly the favourites to clinch the series but the Twins had other ideas.
Ryan Doumit had an excellent time with the bat as he hit a solo home-run in the second to break the deadlock. The designated hitter had an RBI double to left in the third and he added another solo home-run to left in the sixth to take the lead beyond the
Royals’ reach.
"Home runs are always great, but with the bases loaded, him driving it the other way was huge," Gardenhire said. "I thought that was an impressive at-bat. It was a fastball away and he stayed on it and didn't try to do too much with it and shot it the other
way."
"We're really happy we got a chance to get this guy," he added. "It's paying dividends for us. He's a force in the middle of our lineup. He can do a lot of things -- outfield, catch, DH, first base a little. And he can swing the bat.”
Starting pitcher Samuel Deduno worked six plus effective innings, allowing just a run with four strike-outs.
Despite their series win on Sunday, the Twins remained at the bottom of the American League Central Division standings. The fans will be expecting similar results from this team on regular basis.
While the playoffs race is almost over for the Twins, they can certainly make themselves proud by showing more determination and composure.
Royals, on the other hand, are also struggling to find consistency in their game-play. It will be interesting to see if they can close the loop-holes before their next series against Los Angeles Angels.
