Ryan Doumit signs contract with Minnesota Twins – MLB News
The Minnesota Twins have agreed to sign Ryan Doumit on a one-year contract worth $3 million at a time when the player was plagued by injury that cut short his season. With the deal signed now, Doumit hopes he will be able to put in a good performance for
the Twins and play the full season.
Not only does the player want to show his excellence, it is the Minnesota Twins themselves who have to add new vigour in the club, especially when it comes to their offence. The former Pittsburgh catcher will now have an opportunity in this new contract
to show his splendour as a tremendous hitter.
"I looked at it as an opportunity to be versatile, catch a little bit, DH a little bit, maybe play a little outfield," said Doumit. "An opportunity to stay healthy and get some at-bats. ... It's something that I was very excited about."
Having 30 RBIs, maintaining a wonderful average of .303, his eighth homers in the 77 games that he appeared in proved vital for the Pittsburgh Pirates. The fact that he can comfortably play in the outfield position uniquely places him among one of the dependable
players coming the Twins way this season.
The fact that he remained injured, however, was to be compensated quickly by a deal. His injury-plagued season which shortened his presence in the ballpark will not easily allow him to get any contract largely because the teams will think twice about his
health before going for any deal.
However, Doumit found an opportunity here. Now that he will formally be a part of the Minnesota Twins after serving the Pittsburgh Pirates, it is hoped that he will show the league how good of a player he actually is. As far as his injuries are concerned,
he had commented that he was a rough player at times and injuries can sometimes happen.
"I kind of look at it like freak things," Doumit said. "I don't think it has anything to do with conditioning and I don't think it has anything to do with anything other than this is a rough game and I play a rough position.”
The Minnesota Twins might have thought a lot about this deal. The fact that injury may once again afflict the player in the 2012 season is something that will greatly affect the whole composition of the team. Nonetheless, if Doumit survives on this front,
he will be able to place the team in a better position.
With the season around the corner now and Doumit being a part of the Minnesota Twins, it will be interesting to see what type of impact he brings to the team with his performance.
