Ryan Doumit’s homer earns Pittsburgh Pirates a 5-4 win over Houston Astros – MLB Update
Pittsburgh Pirates continued their success streak on Sunday, May 8 for the second consecutive game and defeated Houston Astros by 5-4 at PNC Park, Pittsburgh.
Ryan Doumit struck a homer in the eighth inning to clinch a victory for Pittsburgh Pirates. The win came one night after Pirates easily beat Astros by 6-1.
Doumit’s hit came at a time when the game was going clearly in the favour or Houston which held a seemingly well-defended lead of 4-2. Overjoyed by this feat, the team manager, Clint Hurdle who has previously remained affiliated with the teams like Cincinnati
Reds and Colorado Rockies, expressed his joy with sheer enthusiasm. "Man, did he whack that thing," Hurdle said. "He caught that thing right on the barrel. What a big swing for us, especially the way things were kind of spinning the wrong way. He put a foot
down and kind of changed the direction of the game."
In what seemed a statement tinged by suppressed enthusiasm, Doumit said, "That's all you can do -- show up to the park every day, be prepared to play and when your number is called do the best you can.”
James McDonald was tasked with pitching for Sunday’s game for the Pirates. When he came on the plate, he ensured the remaining unplayable. He threw effective fastballs to keep the Astros’ hitters at bay. When the Pirates’ hitters came on the ground, they
were aggressive from the start. Steve Pearce was the first to score run, giving the Pirates a 1-0 lead.
While James McDonald was simply unhittable, strengthening the Pirates’ defence, the offence was a smooth run. Ronny Cedeno scored the second run for the Astros, giving the team an ostensibly good 2-0 lead.
Chris Resop, who replaced McDonald, did not prove a favourable omen for the Pirates as he allowed the Astros to open their account. Humberto Quintero scored a two-run homer and Angel Sanchez went for a single to not only reverse Pirates’ lead, but also take
the Astros ahead 3-2.
Brett Wallace made it 4-2 for Astros, leaving Pirates wondering at the changing fate of the game. However, no sooner had Fernando Abad come for pitching than Doumit put on his brilliant display. Doumit steadfastly went against Abad and struck a three-run
homer to give Pittsburgh an otherwise hardly predicted 5-4 victory.
