Ryan Fox wins Digicel Fiji Golf Club Open Championship
Ryan Fox, from Auckland, carded a 15-under par tournament score in the Digicel Fiji Golf Club Open Championship, to earn the best victory of his career on Sunday, June 10, 2012.
Fox is playing his debut pay-for-play season, as he defeated the defending champion Nick Gillespie and Fijian Tomasi Tuivuna with a six-stroke margin.
Golf commentators believe that he deserved a victory, especially after four second-place finishes in the last six events that he played.
Last week, he was a little unlucky when he had to take the second spot after Michael Hendry carded an amazing 61 in the final round of the Air New Zealand Koru-Club Pro-Am to win the event.
This time, he did not give a chance to his rivals to even get close to him and thrashed his opponents with a huge margin victory.
According to him, the golf course really helped him record a low score and he loved his visit to Fiji for the tournament.
He told that the only trouble that the course offered during the week was its wet surface, which made the game a little bit tougher. Yet, he managed to get over the conditions, as he is a good player in wet conditions.
"It's a fun place to play and except for the rain overnight, it was all fantastic," said the former New Zealand Eisenhower rep. "I was surprised at how the course handled the rain, we were able to play the full three rounds".
"I am glad I won and I would love to be back next year to defend this title if my schedule permits me," he added.
He is now considered as one of the best emerging golf players from New Zealand, especially after he led the NZ PGA Order of Merit.
If he continues to perform well, the time is not far away when he will be seen contending against one of the biggest names in the world of golf, such as Rory McIlroy, Rickie Fowler, Luke Donald, Tiger Woods etc.
The most important factor is to remain consistent and bring some more improvements in his game that can allow him to compete in bigger events, such as on the PGA and European Tours.
