Ryan Fox wins the New Zealand Amateur Stroke Play Championship – Golf news
Ryan Fox smoothly defeated Shaun Jones by five strokes to win the New Zealand Amateur Stroke Play Championship taking place at the Russley Golf Club in Christchurch.
The amateur made rounds of 68-69-73-73 to make a total of five under par. Fox was the sole player in the championship who made a sub-par four round total.
The second placed Jones made rounds of 68-69-76-75 and hence finished the championship behind Fox. Black McGrory, who belongs to Queensland, finished in third place with a one over and was one stroke ahead of Thomas Brockelsby and Ben Campbell.
The win attained by Fox was his second main New Zealand amateur title after the North Island Stroke Play in March 2011. In Australia, Fox had four top ten finishes at the Australian Master of the Amateurs, Riversdale Cup, Lake Macquarie Amateur and the Australasian
Stroke Play Championships. At the Australia Amateur Championship in March 2011, Fox was also the semi-finalist.
Heading towards the final hole, Fox was leading by seven shots. Even though he double bogeyed the last hole, he was still leading all the players.
“I play aggressive,” says Fox. “That’s my game and I am really proud of getting it done today. This course hasn’t played easy all week, so it’s been good to finish under par and secure this win.”
Fox has been doing really well in New Zealand and won the last four tournaments in succession. He said that he has discovered how to win and that his game has been going really well for quite some time. Seeing the way how things are going for the player,
Fox said that it has given him a lot of confidence.
The New Zealand Amateur championship, which Fox won, had a virtual non-showing of the Australian players- something which is not good for the game.
Fox will now go to the Match Play Championship as the number one seed. Being the talented and young player he is, Fox will surely reach great heights in the world of golf.
