In February 2010, when the details of Chelsea skipper John Terry’s affair with http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Wayne-Bridge-c36733’s former girlfriend, Vanessa Perroncel, became public, the 30-year-old was stripped of the England captaincy.
Manchester United defender http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/South-Africa-c757.
If having the national team’s captain’s armband taken away from him over allegations regarding his private life wasn’t bad enough, Terry had to deal with the wrath of the notorious English media.
The way the incident was blown out of proportion made the entire situation seem a whole lot worse than it actually was.
The fact that Terry had cheated on his wife was not why the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 defender was reprimanded, it was because he had had an affair with his ex-teammates ex.
Terry was shown to be the villain, while former Chelsea teammate Wayne Bridge played the role of the victim to perfection.
By then Bridge had transferred to Premier League rivals Manchester City and on 27th February 2010, in a clash against the Blues, Bridge refused Terry’s handshake knowing full well all the camera’s present at Stamford Bridge that day were focused on the two.
He went a step further when he made himself unavailable for the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/England-c749 national team, apparently giving up his dream to play for his country in the World Cup.
In just days Terry was undoubtedly the most hated man in England, with many people urging then Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti to relieve him of his duties as captain of the Blues.
The Italian manager however, stuck by his captain and insisted he would do no such thing since he considered the player’s life on and off the pitch two different things.
It didn’t take too long for John Terry to recover, who eventually managed to convince his wife not to leave him and in about a year was reinstated as the England http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Captain-c8314.
Even though the England coach http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Fabio-c13152 Capello claimed the reason for reinstating Terry was the fact that Ferdinand had picked up a long term injury, that was not entirely so.
The decision to remove Terry as captain of the England team was never a popular one and the Italian manager was rumoured to be losing support from the squad.
While the recent pictures of Terry and his wife together on holiday in Dubai were nauseating to say the least, they attempted to show the England and Chelsea skipper was a changed man.
However, Terry was apparently not the only footballer scoring away from home, with another Premier League star soon being rumoured to have cheated on his spouse.
After a failed super injunction, it emerged it was none other than Manchester United midfielder Ryan Giggs, who had been involved in an alleged extra-marital affair with glamour model Imogen Thomas.
Giggs had been keeping himself busy, model Imogen Thomas was not the only, his brother Rhodri Giggs’ wife, Natasha Giggs, contacted the media claiming she had been involved with the Manchester United star for over eight years.
While a third woman was also thought to be involved, there has been no confirmation as yet.
The former http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Wales-c3041 international is currently working on trying to convince his wife not to leave him, while he looks to lose his multi-million pound deals with his sponsors, including Reebok.
Despite the outrageously scandalous affair coming out in the open, there has not been the same level of public outrage the Terry-Bridge incident generated.
Does the English media, like most of the referees in the English Premier League, have a soft spot for Manchester United players?
Is this fair? Can Manchester United players have multiple affairs simultaneously and not be reprimanded for their shameful actions?
Are footballers not supposed to be role models? If that is indeed the case, which was why Terry was supposedly removed as England captain, then isn’t it about time Giggs retired?
