Ryan Giggs praises Manchester United’s performance against Chelsea
Manchester United veteran midfielder Ryan Giggs claimed that Man United made double winners, Chelsea look ordinary at times. Chelsea and United recently met in a Community Shield match, where United won 3-1. This was United’s Community shield and Chelsea never looked like a side that scored 103 goals in the premier league last season.
United were to avenge their last season one point defeat to Chelsea in the Premier League and looked forward to meeting the Blues at Wembley for the Shield. The veteran midfielder is confident that a 3-1 thrashing of the Champions gives them a psychological boost over the Blues as United aim for an unprecedented 19th league title. Manchester United came very close to making history last season, but failed to win the premier league, with Chelsea lifting the Cup inevitably. While talking to the media, the 36-year old felt like United controlled most of the game and made Chelsea look ordinary at times.
"It is always nice to win in this manner and that is what we will take out of it”, stated the veteran midfielder, Ryan Giggs. Giggs added that the motive behind playing pre-season matches is to keep in shape and win matches without getting injured. The midfielder added that he is confident with the performance of the team in the pre-season and topped off the result by winning the Community Shield. Giggs was realistic in his approach towards winning the Premier League this season and acknowledged the threat of neighbours Manchester City. The midfielder, however, expected Chelsea to be their main threat for the coming season.
While talking to a local newspaper, Giggs stated that City looks threatening owing to their expensive signings, but United still stands a great chance if they overcome Chelsea in the table. The 36-year old expects a better season from United than the previous one and ranks the Red Devil’s squad stronger than ever before. While referring to the squad, who played the Community Shield match, Giggs stated that there were many talented players who didn’t even make the substitutes bench. Player like Rafael, Federico Macheda, Wes Browm, Tom Cleverley were all absent from the bench, who did extremely well in the pre-season. The player added that Rio Ferdinand and Anderson are also due to return from injury and both of these players will add immense quality to an already strong squad.
The midfielder praised the quality and depth of the squad, and stated that if injuries don’t plague the team this year, the club can make a serious challenge for the title in the coming season. The midfielder outlined the importance of the pre-season and would want the club to keep the momentum going into the new season. Giggs stated that back when he was 17, he used to hate the pre-season training as it used to hurt a lot. Now he understands the importance of the pre-season and gladly trains with the squad. The frustrating part of the pre-season training is that the matches are all friendly, which virtually is of no use. The players just want to train for the season and get on with the season.
The player admitted that the real deal starts when United take on Newcastle in the new season but if Man United keeps on playing like they did against Chelsea, they have a good chance of winning the domestic title. Defeating Chelsea does give a warning to everyone and when you look at the talented bench, everyone would understand that United means business.
Manchester United kick off their new season on 16th August, when they play Newcastle United. Sir Alex Ferguson begins his 24th year with the club and would want to win the premier league title one more time before retiring. The 69-year old would want to overtake Liverpool’s record of 18 titles and establish the club as the most successful club in English history.
