Ryan Giggs warns Manchester United of complacency
Arsenal made a strong statement of intent last night as they defeated Chelsea at the Emirates to pile on the misery on the London Blues, extending their winless streak to 7 games.
This moves Arsenal to within two points of the unbeaten league leaders Manchester United, having played a game more but Manchester United will play Birmingham FC tonight at the St. Andrews and a win for the Red Devils will see them open a 5 point cushion
at the top of the table with the same number of games played as their title rivals.
Although, Manchester United are in a strong position in the league but Ryan Giggs feels that the title could still go anywhere and there is no room for any complacency.
Ryan Giggs only returned to his side after a spell on the sidelines in the 2-0 win over Sunderland and played a pivotal role in the midfield. The clash with Birmingham can potentially put some daylight between them and their nearest rivals but with fixtures
coming as fast as they are, it could well mean that United can be over taken by Manchester City at the top of the table but still the Citizens would have played 3 games more, which leaves Sir Alex’s side with plenty of breathing space.
Despite all things rosy, Giggs, a veteran of more than 650 appearances for the club, knows that no title can ever be won in December no matter how big gap a team opens up on their nearest rivals.
The twinkle toed Welshman is keeping his feet on the ground and has urged his team to maintain focus and not be complacent.
"You are obviously wary because of the way the league has been this year, anyone can beat anyone. We are thankful we remain unbeaten and confidence is high. But we realize that nothing can be taken for granted. It is a tough league and we need to be at our
best in every game."
But, United will be going into the post Christmas period full of self belief and aware of the fact that usually they hit their top form during this part of the season. A 5 point gap at Christmas is something that United can look to build upon and by the
time United face Chelsea on March the 1st, they could be too far in front of their rivals.
"We hope to get better in the second half of the season; our form over the last few weeks has been really good. We looked sharp against Arsenal and Blackburn, and it was the same against Sunderland. Some of the play we produced, the one-touch passing and
the movement, was great to be involved in."
Giggs did not take any credit for the win against Sunderland as he said that it was the unselfish work of Wayne Rooney upfront that helped his side claim three precious points.
Giggs was also full of praise for Dimitar Berbatov, who continued his goal scoring form and backed up his five goals against Blackburn with another two against Sunderland.
But, Giggs feels that the seeds of this victory were sown at the back where Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic stood rock solid, not that they had much to do but still they dealt with whatever was thrown at them.
Giggs is the most decorated player in the history of English Premier League and knows what it takes for a team to win the title as he has done it on more occasions than any other player in the league. His words must be taken seriously by his teammates as
United prepare their final assault on the title in the second half of the season.
