Ryan Harrison bulldozes Flavio Cipolla in the opening round clash – BNP Paribas Open 2012
Unseeded in the tournament draw, the 19-year-old tennis prodigy, Ryan Harrison, took off his BNP Paribas Open campaign in an emphatic fashion by defeating the 82nd ranked Italian, Flavio Cipolla, in the opening round
on Thursday. The world number 72, Harrison, took barely 58 minutes to wrap up victory in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, to march in to the second round of the star-studded event being played in Indian Wells, California, the United States.
It was a completely one-sided affair, with the American teenager dominating every second of it. The crafty right-hander displayed his exceptional tennis skills yet another time to dispose of the 28-year-old Italian veteran in an
assertive way. He beat Cipolla in every segment of the game and stamped his authority within an hour’s time to win the hearts of his home crowd.
Although Harrison delivered merely 58 per cent of his serve on target, the 19-year-old dropped just two points on his first serve, bagging 20 out of 22, en route to victory. He had six break opportunities in the match and he cashed
in four of them to take the better of his bleak opponent. Cipolla utterly failed to even construct a break point in the entire matchup, eventually finishing of the matchup in a dismal manner.
Harrison was off to a flying start in the opening set, breaking his opponent’s serve right up to lead 3-0. Cipolla could hold just one game in the set before suffering another cracking break point and losing the set with a breadstick
at 1-6. The unseeded American carried on with his winning impetus in the following set and drilled two consecutive serve breaks to rocket away to 4-0 in no time. He sustained his mammoth lead in the rest of the contest, eventually finishing it off at 6-2 to
come out as the winner.
Harrison will face the 25th seed Serbian number three, Viktor Troicki, in the second round of the BNP Paribas Open later this week. As all the other seeded contestants of the tournament, Troicki was awarded a bye to
have a direct access to the second round and will begin his Indian Wells campaign against Harrison.
