Ryan Harrison conquers John Isner to reach quarters – Apia International Sydney 2013
In an all American affair, Ryan Harrison stunned his top seeded compatriot, John Isner, in straight sets at the Apia International Sydney 2013 on Wednesday. He notched up a 6-4, 6-4 victory against the world number 13 to power into the quarter-finals at
this Australian Open lead-up tournament taking place in Sydney, Australia.
The qualifier displayed flawless tennis to outclass the American number one for the first time in their third meeting. After bagging this match in one hour and 14 minutes, Harrison not only avenged his loss in Newport last season but also lowered trail in
the FedEx ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Head 2 Head series by 1-2 against his fellow citizen.
"Had to save a couple break points early, but then once I got past those I felt like I served really well and was able to start cashing in a lot rhythm from the ground," said the beaming youngster who recorded his first Top 15 victory.
The 20-year-old assertively entered this ATP World Tour 250 series event. He smoothly bagged his entire serves with poise. Harrison got the breakthrough in the ninth game and eventually clinched the opener with a 6-4 score line.
Ranked 68th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Harrison drew the first blood in the opening game of the following set. He then held his composure and eventually sealed the set by winning six games to four.
The 27-year-old on the other hand fired 10 aces and clobbered a better first serve share of 68 per cent as compared to his rival’s 59 per cent. However, he failed to get the breakthrough and eventually exited from the tournament with disappointment.
"I could play, but from now up until Melbourne I definitely can't practise like I need to," said the highest ranked American in a courtside interview after revealing that he has a bone bruise. "Certainly I could win a match maybe, a match or two.  I don't
see myself winning the whole tournament at this point, that's for sure."
Harrison will square off against the French contender, Julien Benneteau, who received a retirement victory against sixth seeded Radek Stepanek to reach this spot.
