Ryan Harrison defeats Yasutaka Uchiyama in first round qualifiers – Rakuten Open 2011
Ryan Harrison, American world No.86, outplayed Japanese 19-year-old, Yasutaka Uchiyama, in the first round qualifier of the Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championship 2011. Playing at the Ariake Coliseum, hard circuit, the American
moved away with a close 6-7(1), 6-2, 6-4 win in a long two hours and forty minutes match.
Walking down the blue circuit, the Japanese was well applauded. Winning the toss, Uchiyama stood to serve the first game of the match. Serving out game 1, the Japanese 19-year-old rolled down the scoreboard, 1-0, and switched the
serve.
Serving out next, the blue eyed boy blistered game 2 to level the scores at 1-1. Rallying out the next 4 game, the two equalled up again at 2-2 before Uchiyama lit the fire. Breaking each other in back-to-back games, 2 each, the
two contenders stood level at 4-4 with Harrison to serve next.
Winning on respective serves, the set eventually ended up in a tiebreak. Uchiyama served first and blistered the American world No.86, letting him to win just one point and won the tiebreaker set, 7-6(1), to lead the match, 1-0.
Moving on with the second set, Harrison took off with winning the opening game followed by the Japanese levelling up next, 1-1. Equally matched, the two put forward strong defences, however, the American breached the Japanese strongholds
breaking him with a superb forehand volley winner and leading the match 3-1.
Harrison then served out the fifth game to extend his lead to 4-1. Uchiyama did cut the lead to 2-4, however, could not break back. Maintaining his lead, and ending the set with a superb breakpoint, the 19-year-old American went
on to win the set, 6-2, and level up the match scores, 1-1.
With the decider on its way, Harrison once again served the starter and rolled down the scorecard first, 1-0. Dominating throughout the 2nd set, Harrison broke early in the third as well, 2-0, and went on to extend his
lead to 3-0, serving out game 3.
Uchiyama finally won his first game of the set, 1-3; however, Harrison kept on pounding with vicious forehands and cross-courters to overpower the Japanese 19-year-old, 4-1. With scores reaching up to 5-3, Uchiyama struck back
breaking the American in game 9 to cut the lead to 4-5 and served next.
Hoping for another tiebreak win, the Japanese served game 10 and stumbled as the American clinched the final game breaking Uchiyama and winning the set, 6-4, and the match, 2-1, to move into the next stage of the qualifiers.
Harrison now moves onto the second stage of the qualifiers to play against the winner of the match between, Hiroki Moriya and Rainer Schuettler, German, to battle it out for a spot in the main draw of the ATP Tour 500 event.
