Ryan Harrison disposes Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in the third round – BNP Paribas Open 2012
American tennis prodigy, Ryan Harrison, continued to impress everyone with his awe-inspiring skills on courts. The 19-year-old outplayed the Spanish veteran, Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, in the third round of the BNP Paribas Open on
Monday, settling the contest in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5, to make it through to the last-16 of the tournament.
The unseeded local teenager stepped on the courts with conviction and played his naturally aggressive game to drive the 28-year-old Spaniard from the Star-studded tournament in Indian Wells, California, the United States. The world
number 72, Harrison, registered his 11th victory of the running season and the second straight one over Garcia-Lopez in singles competitions. He outsmarted the Spaniard in the opening round of the same venue last year and replicated the similar
results on Monday to gain a 2-0 lead over Garcia-Lopez in head-to-head series.
Harrison stunned the Serbian number three, Viktor Troicki, in the second round of the tournament last week and carried on with his belligerence in the third round to send the Spaniard home with ease. He achieved 64 per cent precision
with his first serve and clinched 32 out of 45 points on it to claim victory. The unseeded American broke his opponent’s serve five out of seven times, while the Spaniard converted three out of his eight break points to finish on the losing side in the end.
The American teenager stumbled early in the match, dropping his serve in the very first game but then lifted off from there to rocket past his opponent in style. He nailed three serve breaks in the opener to close it out at 6-4
and kept with his impetus in the following set. The Spaniard kept crumbling under the pressure of defeat and coughed a number of unforced errors to ease out the path for his opponent to seal a comprehensive victory in the end. Harrison broke the opponent’s
serve twice, while suffering one in the fifth game but kept his lead in tact to conclude victory at 7-5. A total of 142 points were played in the match and Harrison clinched 78 of them.
Harrison will take on the 13th seed French hot favourite, Gilles Simon, in his next clash to fight for a place in the quarter-finals of the season’s first ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Masters 1000 event.
Simon faded away the sloppy resistance from the 23rd seed Swiss opponent, Stanislas Wawrinka, 6-4, 6-4, in the third round draw to face off Harrison.
