Ryan Harrison downs Benjamin Becker in the first round – US Open 2012
American youngster, Ryan Harrison, qualified for the second round of the US Open by beating Germany’s Benjamin Becker in straight sets 7-5, 6-4, 6-2 in his opening match of US Open in New York on Wednesday.
It took the American player just two hours and five minutes to claim victory in a one sided match.
Harrison and Becker held their serves in the first three games to take the score to 2-1 in the latter’s favour. The German contender was first to gain lead, breaking Harrison in the fourth and consolidating on it to move ahead
4-1. Though, Becker was unable to serve it out in the ninth game and then lost three more in a row to drop it 5-7.
In the second set, both players grabbed their opening serves to square off the score at 1-1. Harrison hit a blow to his German rival in the third and capitalised on it to attain a 3-1 advantage. The American rising star did not
allow Becker to come back and closed it 6-4.
Harrison started off in an ideal manner in the third set, winning first four games to race to a 4-0 lead. Becker held his serve in the fifth to break the bagel and reduce the deficit to 1-4 but he managed to add only one more game
to his score and went down 2-6.
The American star will now lock horns with the 2009 champion, Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina, in the second round. The former world number four beat French player, Florent Serra, in straight sets 6-4, 7-6(4), 6-4 in the opener.
Harrison thinks that if luck favours him and it’s his day, then he can respond aggressively to Del Potro’s serve and bring him under pressure. The American believes that it will be a tough task to topple the Argentinean but he
has the potential to do that.
In the post match press conference, he said, "If things go my way, then I know I can return well enough to where I can put some pressure on him. I play good defence, so with some of his shot making, I can make him hit a couple
extra balls on some of his service games. It's not going to be easy, but I think I have the game to do it."
This will be the first meeting between Harrison and Del Potro at any level of men’s professional tennis.
