Ryan Harrison downs Yen-Hsun Lu in the second round – AEGON International 2012
USA’s Ryan Harrison, ranked 53rd in the world, faced limited resistance in beating the world number 55, Yen-Hsun Lu of Chinese Taipei, in straight sets 6-1, 7-6(2) in the round of 16 at the AEGON International in Eastbourne,
England on Wednesday. The American took just an hour and 27 minutes to topple his Taiwanese opponent.
Harrison played flawlessly in the first set, allowing his opponent to clinch only one game until the end and breaking the Taiwanese two times to seal it 6-1.
The American pounded three aces and made one double fault, putting in 66 percent of the first serves and winning 17 of the 23 points on them. The right-hander also did a good job on the replies to Lu’s deliveries, securing seven
of the 13 first and four of the eight second return points. On the other hand, the Taiwanese did not hit even a single ace and committed a couple of double faults. He kept his first serve percentage at 62 and pocketed six of the 13 points on them. Lu failed
to save two of the three break points he faced and could not convert the only one he received in the opener.
The second set was much more competitive than the first one, as both players served brilliantly to hold their serve all the way and take it to a tie-breaker round. Harrison and Lu went on equal terms till 2-2 but the American played
error free game after that, grabbing five straight points and winning it 7-6(2).
Harrison smacked three aces and committed one double fault in the second set. He maintained a low first serve percentage of just 55 but bagged 22 of the 26 points on them. The 20-year–old, however, could not give good performance
on the second deliveries and returns, as he lost 11 of the 21 and seven of the 10 points on them respectively. The 6ft tall was unable to utilise the only break opportunity he created but also put away all the four break threats he came across.
The American will take on Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan in the last-eight stage.
