Ryan Howard sparks as Philadelphia Phillies defeat Florida Marlins 14-2 – MLB Update
Philadelphia Phillies’ first baseman, Ryan Howard had a notable day with the bat as he went 4-for-5 with an average of .259 and hit four RBIs in the Phillies’ 14-2 win against the Florida Marlins at Sun Life Stadium, Florida on July 5.
In the first two innings of the game, the batters were struck-out in search of runs. Jimmy Rollins lined out to left-field, Chase Utley flied out to centre-field and Michael Martinez struck-out looking at the top of the first inning. Mike Stanton singled
to left-field but John Buck popped out to second base at the bottom of the second inning.
The Phillies’ offence stepped on the gas and posted five runs in the third inning to get a 5-0 lead. Raul Ibanez singled off centre-field while Rollins and Utley both added the first two runs for the Phillies. Howard scored the third run when Domonic Brown
singled to left-field. The last two runs of the third inning were taken by Ibanez and Carlos Ruiz to end the five-run campaign.
Both teams put two runs in the fourth inning. Howard struck a two-run homer (429 feet) towards right-centre and Martinez posted a single run for the Phillies. On the other hand, Buck homered (382 feet) to left-field and Stanton contributed one run for the
Marlins. The score-board advanced to 7-2 after the fourth inning.
The batters were unable to put runs in the fifth inning. However, Rollins scored one run during the sixth inning to take the Phillies’ lead 8-2 when Howard singled to shallow right-field. In the seventh and eighth inning, the pitchers limited the scoring
runs of the batters. The Phillies’ starter, Cole Hamels threw beautifully as he pitched eight innings with an ERA of 2.40 in high-scoring game. He permitted just two runs on eight hits and struck-out five batters on his 113 pitches.
Hamels said, “Getting that many runs, it's nice. It felt like the game was in slow motion. In between innings, it was really long.”
During the ninth inning, the Phillies’ batters smashed six runs to raise their lead 14-2. Brown, Ben Francisco, Rollins, Martinez and Howard each singled while Ibanez hit a solo homer (384 feet) towards right-field to finish the six-run ninth inning.
The Phillies led off the three-game series 2-0 against the Marlins at Florida.
