Ryan Lavarnway shines as Boston Red Sox defeat Kansas City Royals 6-1 – MLB Update
Boston Red Sox designated hitter, Ryan Lavarnway had a notable day with the bat as he went 2-for-4 with an average of .333 and hit single RBI to give Red Sox a 6-1 victory over the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium, Kansas City on August 21.
First four innings went in favour of the pitchers as they threw effectively to outclass the batters. Marco Scutaro walked at the top of first inning but at centre-field, Darnell McDonald flied out and Adrian Gonzalez struck-out without any run. Same is the
case with the Royals’ batters as they got out in search of quick runs.
Royals’ first baseman, Eric Hosmer and third baseman Mike Moustakas both walked during the second inning but at centre-field Jeff Francoeur flied out and Johnny Giavotella popped out to second base without taking any run. Billy Butler walked at the bottom
of third inning but at third base, Miguel Cabrera popped out and at first base, Hosmer grounded out.
At last, Red Sox got off the mark in fifth inning and took a 1-0 lead when Jason Varitek tripled to deep right-field and Jed Lowrie scored a single run. McDonald struck a one-run homer (410 feet) towards left-centre to give the Red Sox a 2-0 lead, at the
top of sixth inning. Carl Crawford also hit a solo homer (437 feet) towards right-centre to advance the lead of Red Sox while Royals also added one run to reduce their lead 3-1 during seventh inning.
Giavotella posted the first run for Royals when Moustakas singled to right-field and Salvador Perez moved to second base to end the seventh inning. Red Sox batters smashed three runs jointly to raise their lead 6-1 at the top of eighth inning. Scutaro posted
one run when Gonzalez singled off centre-field.
McDonald took the second run during eighth inning when Lowrie bunted a sacrifice fly to centre-field. The third or last run for Red Sox was taken by Gonzalez when Lavarnway doubled to deep left-centre. Red Sox starter, Jon Lester struck-out three batters
in his six inning pitches and permitted three hits, one run and four walks on his 113 pitches. He allowed only one earned run with an ERA of 3.16.
After having a decent win, Red Sox sealed the four-game series 3-1 against the Royals at Kauffman Stadium.
