Ryan Ludwick powers the Cincinnati Reds to 4-2 win over the Chicago Cubs – MLB News
Ryan Ludwick on Saturday, August 11, hit a two-run double in the eighth inning to help the Cincinnati Reds beat the Chicago Cubs by 4-2 at Wrigley Field. The third game of the four-match series offered all the excitement to the crowd as the two teams battled to triumph.
Reds' starter Bronson Arroyo did his bid with over eight innings spell, allowing only two runs and five hits as the Cubs' hitters struggled to break the stranglehold of the Reds’ defence. Even though Arroyo allowed runs early, it was the Reds offence that came forward strongly to compensate.
Ludwick’s two-run double in the eighth did the needed for the Reds.
"With a runner on third, especially when I got to two strikes, I was just trying to put the ball in play," Ludwick said. "I didn't want to strike out and obviously I was fortunate enough to hit the double and get two (runs) instead of one. Big hit being able to get Bronson a win and win two in a row after losing those five."
It was Aroldis Chapman, then, who had 27th save of the season – third straight win, to finish the game with 4-2 win for the Reds. Chapman has now thrown just over twenty scoreless innings since June 24.
"I think everyone in here is praying and wishing he can get back as soon as possible because we definitely need him on our team.”
David DeJesus of the Cubs laid a supposedly strong foundation for the Cubs with his two-run single to centre in the second inning. Cubs' starter Travis Wood tried to capitalise on that lead and allowed only a run in his seven-inning spell.
However, James Russell blew that lead by give up three runs in the eighth as Ryan Ludwick had a two-run double to make it 3-2 for the Reds. Wilson Valdez followed with an RBI single as the three-run eighth changed the game in the Reds favour.
Aroldis Chapman came in the ninth to save another game for the Reds, outrivaling the Cubs hitters with a hitless and scoreless inning, having two strike-outs to win the game by 4-2.
