Ryan Ludwick’s homer helps San Diego Padres defeat Kansas City Royals 4-3 – MLB Update
San Diego Padres’ right-fielder, Ryan Ludwick was remarkable throughout the day as he hit a two-run homer and went 2-for-4 with the average of .257 in the Padres’ 4-3 win over the Kansas City Royals at Petco Park, San Diego on June 27.
With this valuable victory, the Padres took a 1-0 lead in a three-game series at San Diego.
The Royals’ batters got out at the top of the first as Melky Cabrera was struck-out looking and Chris Getz flied-out to centre-field while the Padres got their initial two runs at the bottom of the first inning and took a 2-0 lead.
In the second inning, the batters were unable to take any run. Eric Hosmer hit a sacrifice fly towards left-field and Cabrera posted the first run for the Royals at the top of the third. On the other side, Mat Latos scored one run on the wild pitch of Jeff
Francis at the bottom of the third inning to move the score-board 3-1.
The Padres’ batters were on top during the fourth inning also as Jesus Guzman added a single run on the throwing error made by Hosmer and Orlando Hudson was grounded out towards third base at the end of fourth.
During the fifth inning, Jason Bartlett flied out to centre-field and Latos struck-out swinging as the pitchers flipped the curveballs. Latos was little bit shaky with his pitching as he threw six solid innings with an ERA of 4.24 and permitted three runs
on seven hits with three earned runs. He struck-out six batters and gave away two walks on 97 pitches.
The Padres’ manager, Bud Black commented on Latos and said, “Not as sharp as we've seen him the last five outings or so. He was a little bit under the weather today but battled through it.”
The Royals’ batters were able to reduce their lead 4-3 in the sixth inning by adding two runs on their score-card. Alex Gordon and Jeff Francoeur both scored two runs collectively when Brayan Pena doubled to deep right-field.
Pena said, “That was a good relay from the guys. I was just trying to do my job and protect home plate the best way possible.”
The last three innings of the game went score-less as the batters played slothful shots and popped out towards the fielders.
