Ryan Madson’s one year deal with the Cincinnati Reds – MLB News
While the one-year deal between Ryan Madson and the Cincinnati Reds may be finalised, there is a bout of exchanges between his former team, the Philadelphia Phillies and agent Scott Boras.
On Wednesday, reports indicated that the reliever’s agent Scott Boras and Ruben Amaro Jr. of the Philadelphia Phillies had sharp disagreements over the future prospect of the reliever when he was in the team.
While the Phillies’ manager Amaro Jr. was of the view that the team had their own route to follow, Scott Boras sticks to Madson did not reject the deal with Phillies; but Philadelphia instead signed a deal with the closer Jonathan Papelbon.
"It's very simple," Boras said. "We never rejected any offer from Philadelphia at four years and $44 million. We advised Philadelphia that we would agree to such a proposal. And Philadelphia decided upon hearing that to go in a different direction."
However, Amaro avoided responding bitterly to the claims made by Boras. His argument was that the Phillies eventually did what they thought was better in the long run.
"There's no reason for me to get into a public debate with Scott on this," Amaro said. "I have no desire to do that. All I can tell you is, there was never an agreement, and we decided that we wanted to sign someone with the experience and the ability of
Jonathan Papelbon.”
Whatever differences that have come to the fore now, Boras stated that Madson was looking at his role as the closer as he signed the deal with the Cincinnati Reds for 2012. Interestingly, Madson will replace a player in the Reds who was instrumental in bringing
victories to the team.
Francisco Cordero had the distinction of saving no less than 150 games for the Reds in the last four seasons that he represented the team. However, the player remains a free-agent now with apparently no big prospect of offers in the days to come.
Madson who played a total of 62 games the past season maintained an ERA of 2.37 as reliever and sometimes as a closer, having had 62 strike-outs and four wins to his credit, losing only two games in total.
