Ryan Mathews struggling with high ankle sprain
The Chargers rookie running back Ryan Mathews is hoping to recover from a high ankle sprain in order to play on Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks.
The injury, which was sustained in the first quarter of the Chargers' win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, appears to worse than was first thought.
Following the game, Coach Norv Turner had said that Mathews could have gone back in if need be. But Mathews did not participate in the practice on Wednesday. Despite missing practice, Mathews wasn't overly concerned with the injury, citing caution as the reason
for his absence from drills.
"I don't think it's that bad," said Mathews. "I've had a high ankle before, a while ago. But they're going to do what they need to do to take precautionary measures to make sure something that could be a week, if I don't treat it right, [won't] turn into six
weeks." Mathews plans to return to limited action on Thursday.
Mathews young career has been a mixed bag so far. He has run well, averaging over four yards-per-carry with 101 yards on 24 attempts, plus three catches for 31 yards. He has yet to score a touchdown and has fumbled twice, turnovers that led to 10 points
for the opposition.
"It's real humbling. I've just got to work harder and just get ready," Mathews said. "I've got to wait and be patient. My time's going to come. Right now, I'm going through some injuries, but that's the road you've got to take."
With Mathews out of the game against Jacksonville, his backup, Mike Tolbert played well, running for 82 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries.
Mathews' status for this Sunday's game against the Seahawks is up in the air.
"It's whatever the trainers think," Mathews said. "They're going to go on how I feel and everything, and I feel good. So it's up to them.
