Ryan McLaren called up as Wayne Parnell’s replacement for New Zealand T20s – Cricket News Update
South Africa have recalled all-rounder Ryan McLaren as a replacement for Wayne Parnell in their squad for the upcoming three-match T20 series against New Zealand, starting in Durban on Friday, December 21, 2012.
If picked up on Friday, McLaren will be playing his first T20 International since October 2010. The Chevrolet Knights’ all-rounder earns the T20 recall at the back of a productive 2012-13 domestic season, picking up 15 scalps in six matches at an average of 15.06 besides scoring 179 runs at an average of almost 45 per match in the recently concluded Momentum One Day Cup. He also impressed the selectors during his lone first-class appearance this summer, returning with six wickets.
To date, he has played 121 Twenty20 matches picking up 102 wickets at 29.93, with career best figures of 5 for 19. He has also scored 966 runs with the bat at an average of 21.00, including a career best of 51 not out.
McLaren was also called up as reserve for several injured players, mainly for veteran all-rounder Jacques Kallis, during South Africa’s Test tour of Australia late last month.
Left-arm pacer Parnell has been ruled out of action for two weeks after he suffered a wrist injury. The left-arm medium pace bowling all-rounder has had an injury plagued career so far. He had picked up a groin injury in 2010 and has not had a fruitful career since – taking only seven wickets in 14 limited overs international appearances since then. He also failed to impress with the bat in those one-day fixtures amassing just 121 runs at an average of 24.20.
The three-match series between South Africa kick starts in Durban on Friday, December 21, 2012. The second T20 will be played at East London a day later while the third and final fixture of the series will be hosted by Port Elizabeth on the Boxing Day.
South Africa’s revised T20 squad: Faf du Plessis (capt), Farhaan Behardien, Henry Davids, Quinton de Kock, AB de Villiers, Rory Kleinveldt, Richard Levi, David Miller, Morne Morkel, Chris Morris, Ryan McLaren, Robin Peterson, Aaron Phangiso, Dale Steyn, Lonwabo Tsotsobe.
