Ryan McLaren replaces Albie Morkel on South Africa T20 squad – Cricket News Update

South African all-rounder, Ryan McLaren, has been called-up on the Proteas Twenty20 (T20) squad which is scheduled to face the Australian tourists in the upcoming two T20 fixtures, set to be played on October 13 and 16, in Cape Town and Johannesburg respectively.

Based on reports, McLaren will be taking over Albie Morkel’s spot on the roster, who recently called off his commitment with the national side for four to six weeks after suffering from an abdominal muscle tear during a recent Champions League T20 match,
where the all-rounder was representing the Chennai Super Kings.

The news was further confirmed by the former South African cricketer, Andrew Hudson, who on behalf of the selectors, said that though Morkel’s omission is a real blow for the Proteas, McLaren fits in as the right pick for the job, since the player has been
quite effective under the shortest format of cricket.

“Although it is a blow to lose Albie Morkel, Ryan McLaren has always done well for us in this format,” Hudson said.

“He is one of the few bowlers to take five wickets in a T20 international. In addition he comes into the series in good form, having made a big century for the Knights at the weekend,” he added.

McLaren premiered in his first ever One Day International (ODI) match in November, 2009, against Zimbabwe, and that same month, McLaren also marked his International T20 debut.

Having played a one-off Test match in January, 2010, till now, McLaren has played five T20s and 10 ODIs for the Proteas.

As for the player’s upcoming assignment against the Aussie tourists, McLaren will have to make the best use of the opportunity, since the team will be stepping out with some major exclusions on its roster, including Skipper AB de Villiers, followed by Mark
Boucher, and now Morkel.

The competition kicks off on October 13, with two T20 matches, followed by a mini 3-match ODI series and the eventual two Test fixtures.
