Ryan Miller falls short as Philadelphia Flyers rout Buffalo Sabres 3-2 -NHL Match Update
Philadelphia came out strong and took control of the match early in the first period as the Flyers routed the Buffalo Sabres, 3-2, for their second straight loss at home on Wednesday night, November 2, 2011, at the First Niagara Center in Buffalo, New York,
United States.
Veteran Buffalo goalie, Ryan Miller, was taken out 6:23 into the matchup during the opening period after he let three straight goals into his net after facing only 11 shots. He was replaced by backup goalkeeper, Jhonas Enroth who played the remainder of
the match and blocked all 15 shots.
“I was fighting position on the first one; I couldn’t quite get where I needed to be, couldn’t get recovered with the traffic”, Miller said. “After that it was two high glove shots. Good shots, but at the same time they were cross body from that side. I’d
like to be better and have that”.
Flyers goalie, Ilya Bryzgalov, faced more shots on his net than both Miller and Enroth combined, but managed to block 29 out of 31 in all.
"Everyone battled hard and we were rewarded with two points", Bryzgalov said. "It was a really tough game for us. We played very good in the first period, but then in the second period we turned over the puck and got some penalties".
Sean Couturier and James van Riemsdyk scored two straight only 13 seconds apart to put Philadelphia ahead, 2-0, within the opening two minutes of the first period. They were followed by Scott Hartnell, who extended the lead with his fifth of the 2011-2012
National Hockey League (NHL) regular season to force the Buffalo management to eject Miller from the ice.
Andrej Sekera scored the only goal during the second 20 minutes, nearly midway through for his first goal of the season. As soon as the period came to a close, four players were booked for various penalties at the 20:00 mark as Mike Weber and Braydon Coburn
were penalised for fighting with a major penalties and Derek Roy and Zac Rinaldo for slashing and a game misconduct.
Luke Adam made another with a little over 10 minutes left in the third period, but Buffalo failed to equalise after that.
The Flyers have the next two games at home, starting off with the New Jersey Devils on Thursday, while the Sabres play the Calgary Flames on Friday.
