Ryan Moore disappointed due to one-stroke penalty during the Wells Fargo Championship - Golf News
Ryan Moore was upset for being penalised on the 11th hole due to the movement of the ball after he addressed it to make the par putt during the second round of the Wells Fargo Championship on Friday, May 4, 2012.
During the Zurich Classic of New Orleans in 2011, Webb Simpson was penalised for the movement of the ball due to wind after it was addressed.
Therefore, the R&A changed the Rule 18 2-b that states that the player will not be penalised if the ball moves due to some outside source.
This was the similar reason why Moore was upset because he thought that he had nothing to do with the movement.
Therefore, he should not have been penalised for something he did not do.
"Today I got a penalty stroke for absolutely no reason," Moore said, who had to settle for two-under par 70 after the penalty. "I went to address my little tap-in and set into it and set my putter down behind it. Took my stroke back and the ball just settled
a little bit”.
“I thought that was the whole point of the ruling change from last year that Webb had incurred. But it turns out the ruling didn't really change anything,” he added. “It's still a penalty, even though I had nothing to do with my ball settling into a lower
spot".
Steve Rintoul, a PGA Tour rules committee offical, said that if the ball moves after being addressed without the presence of an outside source such as wind, bee, or a fly, it is considered to be moved by the player.
Hence, Moore was forced to accept the decision, but with a disappointment on his face.
Yet, he had one thing to cheer about at the end of the round, and it was his overall score on the leaderboard.
Posting a seven-under par 65 allowed him to stay in contention while entering the weekend. He is just three strokes behind the leader, Nick Watney.
Watney carded a total of seven birdies and an amazing eagle against a lone bogey to score an eight-under par 64 on Friday. His two-round score is 12-under par.
